Adamjee Jute Mills reopening project starts in December
Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha . Dhaka
The jute and textiles ministry will start implementation of a project by December to reopen the closed Adamjee Jute Mills Limited.
The ministry has sent a letter to prime minister Sheikh Hasina seeking the return of 22 acres of land of the now closed country’s biggest jute mill to resume production.
After the closure of Adamjee, the land was given to Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority.
After getting the prime minister’s decision on the land, Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation will start implementation of the project to reopen Adamjee by December, jute secretary Ashraful Makbul told the news agency.
The cost to launch a 1,000-loom jute mill on 22 acres of land has been estimated at Tk 608.72 crore.
In the first phase, work will start on an export-oriented 500-loom mill under ‘Jute Yarn Diversity’ project at a cost of Tk 304 crore.
When the 1,000-loom mill will go into operation, it will create job opportunities for 5,720 workers.
The jute secretary said the ministry has got the assurance of Tk 700 crore in the budget to reopen Adamjee and five other jute mills under BJMC and pay dues for jute purchase and arrears of workers.
Adamjee Jute Mills director (production) Tariqul Islam said a plan has been taken to rebuild Adamjee as a big jute mill of export-oriented products.
A guideline has been made which will include installation of factory, godown, boiler, power station, godown for raw jute, import zone and administrative office at shed no 2 of the closed jute mill.
Negotiations are on with an Indian and a Chinese company to import machinery for the modern jute mill.
