100 including 13 policemen hurt in Habiganj clash

More than a hundred people, including 13 policemen, were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Shayestaganj in the Habiganj district headquarters on Saturday.
The police said residents of 12 villages equipped with homemade lethal weapons clashed in a sequel to an altercation between a biscuit company agent and transport workers over picking up passengers at Shankhola on August 29.
The villagers divided into two groups attacked each other. The clash continued for three hours beginning 10:00am.
Residents of Talugorai, Biramchar, Moholulsunam, Jagannathpur, Shyampur, Borochar and Nijgaon sided with the biscuit company agent and residents of Nishapot, Korkorhati, Dhakijangal, Morra and Kazirgaon favoured Daksu, a transport workers’ organisation.
The local police reached the spot, fired more than over 1,500 rubber bullets and 100 teargas shells but failed to control the situation.
The police in riot gear and Rapid Action Battalion members rushed to control the situation.
Thirteen policemen, including additional police superintendent Zillur Rahman, sustained injuries during the clash. Zillur’s vehicle was also damaged. Forty of the injured were wounded with rubber bullets.
Traffic on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway had been suspended for about three hours.
The injured were admitted to General Hospital and Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital.
