Govt releases four more death-row convicts

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha . Dhaka

Jail authorities released four more death-row convicts Tuesday morning under the president’s clemency from Rajshahi Central Jail.
As part of the clemency, 10 condemned convicts of a murder case were released from Dhaka Central Jail as the president, Zillur Rahman, pardoned 20 people who awaited execution in Dhaka and Rajshahi central jails.
Jail officials said the remaining six could not be freed under the clemency as they were detained on several other charges.
‘We have executed the presidential order immediately. . . but the six could not be released from Rajshahi jail as they are implicated in several others cases,’ deputy inspector general of prisons Partha Gopal Banik told BSS.
Officials said the president granted the clemency to the 20 death-row inmates who were handed down the capital punishment for murdering Sabbir Ahmed Gama, a leader of Natore district unit of BNP which was in power at that time.
